I have just installed a Hozelock watering system and want to check works by manually watering the garden to check all the connections work, however when I press the button to allow me to do this it starts but stops again after only a couple of seconds, any ideas what the problem could be ??

Which controller do you have? The instructions provided should show how to set the system to manual operation.
