Plant identification

Birdy13Birdy13 Posts: 595

Last year I posted a request for plant identification under a thread entitled Proliferating Bulbs.

I also showed this picture of some sort of root or rhizome which I couldn't identify.

I saved one or two of them (but am unsure where) and I believe this pot may contain some of that strange looking root.

Do the flowers of the second picture match the root of the first picture, please? And can anyone tell me what they are?

    Sorry Fidget. I'll try again...

I think I used a different method for the first one. Please bear with me if it goes wrong again.

Your first picture has not appeared but the flowers look like Iris sibirica.

Sorry. I retried the wrong photo image

I think I'd better go back to bed...

Well Birdy I have absolutely no idea about whether the two belong together but someone on here will know.

I think the plant is Iris foetidissima 'Citrina'.  It has bright orange seeds which appear when the seed casing dries.  I've never looked at the roots but I believe they smell foul (hence the name), so you could give them a sniff, Birdy...

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Thanks Liriodendron, the name Iris foetidissima does ring a bell with someone on this forum last year suggesting the nickname stink iris for the roots I was trying to identify. That seems to suggest I've at last identified both root and flower.

    Thankyou everyone on the forum.
