Lavender Newbie

Hello,

This is my first ever post so please be kind! :P

I recently started gardening after moving into my own flat, i currently have a small front garden with shrubs, and a back paved yard which i am attempting to fill with pots (this will take time as i am poor!)

Since i am poor, i made my own wooden container from crates and planted two lovely lavender bushes in it. I forgot to take note of the variety, so i would be much appreciated if anyone could help me with this.

I am have O.C.D and other mental health issues so i am very pedantic, as so i worry over the state of my plants quite a bit (silly i know but i'm working on it)

I wondered why some of the stems of the lavender seem to be lovely and bright and tall, very purple tops with purple flowers, and some look rather sickly, with faded tops and pink flowers instead of bright.

Since i am so new to all this i wanted to know if there was anything i should be doing that i am not, i am watering when its very hot, at the roots and not over the plant, its in fertile soil, could it be something to do with the mums i have planted them with? Do i need to do any pruning?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have attached some pics for reference

    Hi Jenna and welcome.

What you have there is a French Lavender papillon. It's easy to remember because the little tufts on the top look like butterflies and the French for butterfly is...you've guessed it, papillon.

The flowers look slightly different from each other because they will have opened at different times and therefore are at different stages of development. Nothing to worry about there.

As for conditions, they don't like it too rich or wet. Well drained, sunny and sheltered. Have a wee look at this link for more info on how to look after them.

  • Hi Jenna, your French Lavendars look just like mine - virtually at the same stage i.e. some flower heads still look fresh and others are finishing off. I have never grown this variety before either, but I also know that they thrive in poor, well drained soil, with as much sunshine as possible. Plant Pauper has a wealth of gardening knowledge and has given some very helpful information here.

Thanks so much for your info :) The soil is just regular garden compost, and im only watering it when its very warm, as we have had alot of rain at the moment anyways.

    Yay happy plants :)
