Lupin infestation

Can anyone help me - this year 3 of my lupin plants are full of little grey creepy crawly things completely covering the stems and flowers - have tried bug spray which seems to kill them off but then the next day there seem to be new ones back again.  They have destroyed the flowers and the foliage becomes sticky.  Down at the base of the plant and soil area is covered.  I have a few lupins in other area of the garden which seem ok.  Do I need to get rid of these lupins or cut right back and start again

Lupins are quite susceptible to attack by aphids and they can do a lot of damage in a short time. Try spraying with a dollop of washing up liquid in luke warm water and keep doing it till they've gone. I got mine early so it only took one spray but I'll be keeping a close eye on them. Really give them a good soak. Do the surrounding area too if they're all around the base.

I've had the same problem with my Lupins. I noticed that the ones on the east facing side became almost completely covered in the hateful little beasts but, the west facing ones were totally untouched. I moved the infected ones to the west facing side after cutting back severely. It seems to have worked so far. I wish I knew why though. Could it be west facing is warmer, wetter, stronger afternoon sun?

  • thanks to everyone for their replies - I have done the washing up liquid spray and although it seems to shift them I think there were just too many and the damage was underway.  Strangely mine that are infected are in full sun too - do you think its worth cutting them down and moving them to a shadier place?
