Climber for shade
Hi everyone
I'm looking for a fairly fast growing evergreen climber for a piece of fence in deep shade under my holly tree.
It needs to be fast growing, structured - something that I can clip to shape - as I already have a lovely rambling red honeysuckle growing up that tree.
Someone suggested hedera and I almost got the baseball bat out - it's taken me 10 years to clear and dig up the ivy that was there when I moved in :-)
I'm thinking euonymous silver varieties, is there anything else. Sarcococca grows too slowly, I have one under there but it hasn't done much in three years.

You dont want much do you, quick growing AND structured. Well, fast growing ruthless with the pruning (structuring it!!) Clematis Armondii, there is a climbing evergreen Hydrangea. I have a clematis General Sikorski, purple flowers if you want it, for somewhere along your posh fence? Not the very shady bit.
The only climbers you can get that will manage in deep shade are either another honeysuckle or a Vinca which could be trained against the fence but isn't particularly structured. A variegated one will brighten up the shade and provide you with pretty purple flowers too. Just keep a close eye on it's spreading ways.
I have a climbing Hydrangea , nice white flowers , but not a very fast grower where I have it on a North facing wall ,
I want it ALL Nanny :-) Structure and speed. Yes I'd love the clematis if you can spare it. You can never have too many. Thanks.
I was looking at the shade bed and wondering what I was thinking when I planted it up - it is a right dog's dinner, full of random plants none of which compliment each other.
The other shade bed is great - ferns and foxgloves, lovely.
This one under the holly tree which is about 5x5 foot seems to be the repository for all the plants I don't want. They are all coming out. I'll keep the geraniums and aquilegia which look nice - the sarcococca which I love is going in a pot as is the camellia which is not happy under there and the rest in the bin as they are fit for nothing.
I'm going to get two euonymous silver and green variegated variety and they can climb at the back.
It is true - less is more.
Nah MORE is MORE, dogs dinner, I got out a new loo roll today, guess where it is now!!!
I have Clematis Pink Fantasy and Fujimusume which is wedgewood blue growing in heavy shade, for speed variegated Vinca is a good choice.
It's in the dog Nanny :-)
I didn't know clematis grew in the shade Flowerlover, I must try that in another area. Trying not to get carried away but concentrating on the winter structure of the garden because currently it doesn't have any.
I think I'm going to get carried away though :-)
No, Lou its scattered all round the blooming garden, either that or they got the weather completely wrong and its been snowing!
Oh dear, where to start clearing up the mess!!!
I went to the garden centre and wandered round for three hours looking at all the pretty flowers I have no room for and came out with a euonymous blondy and two packets of nigella seed which I thought was very restrained of me
The answer to ivy is still no
I got a euonymous in the end. It is quite deep shade.
