Nymphaea caerulea growing question

Hi I'm currently growing a small Nymphaea caerulea seedling indoors and was wondering if some leaves should be kept above water in order to respire? Or can this plant gather oxygen underwater.. thanks

The leaves should be floating on the water. You can raise it up, and then lower it as the leaf stems extend.
