Using cut grass to keep strawberries off the soil

Hi,

As the title said, ive got a stawberry patch which is fruiting nicely, i was going to go to the local garden center to get some staw to put underneath the fruit to stop them sitting on the soil.

The inlaws have a very large garden and offered a big bag of cut grass.

Would grass work or would i be better off getting straw instead??

Ta.

Grass would be too wet. In my limited (very) knowledge of strawberries you put them on straw to keep them dry and stop them rotting. Someone might know different but hold fire till someone who knows comes along.

i use grass as mulch to stop weeds in certain areas but my strawberies i have on weed membrane, other option is cardboard.

    straw wasnt recommended

Surely that would make them cardboard berries. image

    Haha ^

If you could dry the grass I guess it would work. Not sure how you would do it but still, the option's there ;)

I always use the hay I give to my rabbits think grass would be too damp

Don't use the grass! Heed what the other posters have put on here. Dry straw is the best.

    hi all

just for cheapness i used cardboard on one of my patches which keeps the weeds down and protects the fruit from getting dirty

simple and cheap as you like

The reason for using straw is that water passes through it, leaving a clean surface behind (which dries quickly) to keep the fruits off the soil. I wouldn't use grass clippings. Once they get wet, they'll form a slimy solid barrier.

Grass will be fine.  Use it generously.
