helping my christmas tree
Hi i have a living potted Christmas tree i got two years ago. It sprouted new sections last year so was able to use again. But I've noticed bottom branches are not growing. I want to keep in pot still to use again.but not sure what to do to make it grow. Do i cut the branches back?

Hi filmbuffy. Sorry but your tree needs to be moved into the ground if you want it to survive. The pot is now too small for it. Once the branches are dead they won't regrow.
hi thanks for reply. so I cant keep using it as a xmas tree? if I had of known I would have got a cut tree.
so if I plant it in ground. will new bottom branches grow??
could I possibly just move it into a bigger pot?
I'm sorry but nothing will regrow, they don't have resting buds waiting to take over from dead bit like a lot of deciduous trees. What's brown now will stay brown.
In the sticks near Peterborough
It won't grow new branches to replace the old dead ones.
If you do this again, you need to give it a decent sized pot with good quality compost and regular feeding and watering. In a pot it is entirely dependent on you for food and water - like a houseplant. Rain on its own won't be enough.
They grow well planted in the ground. Too well.
In a couple of years it would be too big dig up easily, and if left it would make 60 foot, no problem.
Not a tree for a small garden!
Too true. We buy rooted trees most years but have only once had one grow when planted out. It's now as high as the house but has a raised canopy cos the horses in the paddock leant over and ate the lower branches on one side. I cut the other branches to stop it looking unbalanced and now it's a fine tree.
