What did I see in my garden?

I was in my garden tonight, well 2.30 in the morning, and saw a thread like creature, maybe a little thicker than a beard hair. Approx 3" long. What seemed to be the front inch was whipping around ( not fast though) and catching on to things to move itself, pretty randomly it seemed?

Thanks pansyface, I'm pretty sure that's the critter. I'm wondering do they have any benifit?
Well,anything other than themselves. For instance mosquitoes are a pain but are a source of food for many other creatures and do some pollination,
