Re-juvenating an old Pieris by cutting back

Hi, My old Pieris is about 8ft tall, Still has a reasonable crown of foliage but apart from that it is bare down to ground level. It has patches of bark peeling off so I've been assuming it's on its 'last legs'. There's a woody 'sport?' coming from its base which in itself has formed a small (2ft) bush and I was wondering whether to cut the main part completely back and hope the offshoot thrives?

Grateful for advice on this,Thanks.

yes , I took advice on a similar question on here last year and I cut down all the back (left the front as didn't want it totally nude) . now the back has refreshed and is bushy , so this year have cut the front down. totally rejuvenated pleased to say
