Not so blank canvas
I have moved to a house with a garden that has been neglected for twenty years and would appreciate any advice as I have never tackled a garden project of this magnitude.
I have an area that is full of Ash sapling roots, brambles and numerous other weeds and grasses.
After erecting a new shed and laying a new patio in front, I would like to lay this area to lawn and have a section of this lawn laid with wild flowers.
What is the best way to first clear the area and then create a wildlife friendly, informal lawn? Also, what time of year is best to do this and how long after clearing should I wait to lay the lawn?
I will try to add a photo later.
Thanks

Hi there. Try and get rid of all the ash saplings, brambles and weeds and then just keep mowing the rest. New lawns can be laid in Autumn so if you can do all that preparation you may not need to lay a new lawn - re seeding bare areas is an answer. If you intend a wild flower meadow then sow some plug plants of wild flowers now and these can be planted directly into the grass where you want them. Bear in mind that you cannot mow your wild flower meadow until the flowers have set seed so that would possibly be next Autumn
