Climbing plants -can these be planted together?
Hello all - it's my first topic/post on the forum.
I've recently purchased a new house, so I am very new to the gardening scene and was hoping to get some advice from the more experienced folk.
I am trying to get some climbers for a trellis (1.2m wide, 2.2m high) on the wall of my house. I am planning to put a big planter underneath the trellis (something like 50cmx50cmx110cm, so around 275l).
I wanted to plant something that is evergreen and blooms. In order to have some flowers in bloom for as much of the year as possible, I was thinking of combining:
1. the Japanese Honeysuckle - blooms June-September;
2. blue passiflora and/or passiflora 'amethyst' - bloom in May-November;
3. virgin's bower 'Apple Blossom' (clematis armandii) - blossoms February-April; and
4. virgin's bower 'Freckles' (clematis cirrhosa var balearica ) - blossoms December-February.
Would anyone be able to advise:
(1) how many plants can I plant in that big planter (all to climb over that one 1.2mx2.2m trellis) without getting it "overcrowded"; and
(2) can all of the above live in the same planter given their particular needs? If not, which can?
Many thanks!

I would stick to one climber for a container that size, if you want lots of growth from a climber they needs lots of space to grow their roots (think that above ground growth and below ground growth are about the same size)
either of the clematis will cover that in a year once they are settled in (which might take a year or two)
however one word of warning - clematis do not like their roots warm, so if the container is on a south facing wall I would reconsider clematis, go for something like jasmine (winter or white choice is yours)
I agree. keep it simple. Plants need food and water to grow well and cramming too many into a planter and making them compete for limited resources will give poor results.
