It depends what type of Bamboo it is. Some Bamboo has invasive Rhyzines. That means that its Rhyzones develope out of your clump of Bamboo and radiate out underground in to other parts of your garden elsewhere.Sprouting definetly where you don't want them. Their best grown in containers.

    Others grow self contained.

Hi NewBoy. Check what variety it is. If its Phyllostachys nigra or Phyllostachys aurea then these are quite well behaved but other bamboo varieties can be very invasive. I have both those I've mentioned and just to give you an example of how tall they can grow - I can see my black bamboo out of my bedroon window so thats at least 15 feet.

I was recommended to shove them in a big plastic pot.  Kew gardens if I remember correctly contains them with thick plastic barriers.  I was wondering if a couple of old slabs would do the trick.

It was hard work getting a cutting from a neighbour, lots of hacking and sweat for a small clump, that I have in a plastic pot, and is now filling out well.  The first year, I think it was too shaded, and suffered a bit.  I then put in a more moisture retentive compost, placed in full sun and watered a lot.

What's the general advice for situation, and watering?

I planted bamboo fargesia last year for the very reason that it was clump forming and shouldn't be too invasive. It's been very slow to grow though
