Identify Plug Plants
Hi all,
Sorry sure you get bored of newbie gardeners asking "what is this" so my apologises..
I wanted a quick fix and bought a "lucky dip" of plug plants from well known supplier online. Very disappointed as the plants have no paperwork at all with them, the plugs are not labelled as to what they are, or most importantly no care instructions, ie can they go straight outside in larger pots or beds? Do they need potting on first etc.. Have sent a stern upset email to said supplier.
But in the meantime if anyone can help at all please?

At least they look healthy.
3 looks like Mesembryanthemum
4 looks like Cosmos
1 possibly New Guinea Impatiens
2 possibly antirrhinum

Hi Pete,
Thankyou kindly, i will do some research on those now.
I agree with 1,3 &4 .
2 I don't know.
Generally do they need potting into small pots indoors first? Or are they ok to go straight out into bigger pots? Final home is likely 16" pots on patio etc..
Actually thinking about it, they were sold as "garden ready" so assuming i can plant them out right now..
I'd pot them up into bigger pots initially for 2-3 weeks, but no real reason not to put into the bigger pots if you wish.
Cosmos can get straggly and fall around, and as we don't know the variety it may be an idea to pinch out the tops to let them get bushier and sturdier. Just pinch out the top bit of growth if you want to do this.
The mesembryanthemum need full sun otherwise the flowers wont open.
Not sure what part of the UK you're in, but here in essex it's 9c today. It was warmer on Xmas day!!

Im in Kent, so not far away.. And yes this weeks been awful, want to paint the fence but been postponing it with on and off drizzle etc!
I think just for practical reasons (i dont have much gardening stuff yet, pots etc) i will take the chance of potting them out in there final patio pots and hope they do ok,
Thanks for the tips, i will pinch out the Cosmos, i had some cosmos last year too and needed pea sticks for support. My garden is partial shade so i may put the mesembryanthemum out in the front garden then as its very sunny that side (house is wrong way around sadly!).
Its just a quick fix to brighten up the place this year hopefully, Slowly re-landscaping and putting in new beds, so hopefully next year bigger and better things..
