Spindly tomato plants

GrajeanGrajean Posts: 447

I have just planted my tomato plants into their rings in the greenhouse and they do look rather spindly. Will they improve?

I have been on holiday for 2 weeks so not potted the plants on as usual.

Once they get their roots down, they will romp away.

You did plant them out a little late, I wonder if they might have been pot bound??

I have the same problem with a few donated tomato pl ants of Alicante type, not a variety I usually grow but they meant well..

My favourite is Gardeners Delight but this year I added several different varieties including Marmande Roma, Ailsa Craig, Money maker etc... We shall see how they do,some are inside as they need a longer growing season, most are outside..Fingers crossed for all of us  image

If you bury the stem up to the first true leaves, extra roots form out of the stem to help the plant. Plant as deep as you can.

  • You can help avoid them getting spindly if you ensure the young seedlings have plenty of light. Window sills tend to encourage spindliness due to less light. Also I re pot them twice before planting out.
After that, as fidgetbones says, plant them much deeper to encourage root growth higher up the stem.

Thank you everyone for your help. My tomato plants are now looking really health and fruit forming,
