Have Some conifer Seeds. Not sure how to go about planting/germinating them.

I have some conifer seeds and im not sure whether i should just stick them in seed tray and hope for the best. Or try doing the kitchen towel paper bag method?
All answers are much appreciated, Archie

I'd put them on pots (more depth than a seed tray) of gritty compost and leave them outside, somewhere shady, til they germinate
