SAGE flowering problem

First time I've experienced this, I have a wonderful sage bush quite large, its always reached full flowering no problem previously, the bees love it in flower and so do I, but alas, this year for the first time, I am having this problem.
The sage has developed its flower buds and for some reason before achieving its bloom has turned brown, I have only one or two that look like they are going to reach flowering bloom.
The leaves look health enough but perhaps the plant is now too big to support all the flowers. The plant is about 8 years old.
Not sure if taking cutting from it will be healthy enough.
Anyone else had this happen? What could be wrong?
What do others think is happening. Could it be its natural life cycle is coming to an end?
Not yet taken a picture of it but can do if needed, perhaps someone can provide a link to something that shows the problem.
Many thanks for your suggestions and advice.

I have never had aphids on sage before, could this really be what has caused this flower browning, I see its on a lot of stems but not on all.
I guess I have to cut it right back now and take cutting as I've lost the flowering season.
Sad
The flowers look like they have finished flowering but in fact they didn't make it.

It seems quite early for sage to be blooming ... could the flowers have been frosted?

Mmmmm my sage has been in full bloom for well over a week now. They don't like to be too wet and I was under the impression they only really thrive for about 4-5 years before you need a new one.
One of the other forums says check there are no tiny spiders in it, they may be killing it off.
No signs of sage flowering in this icy blast here in Norfolk

Good news folks, I cut it back well about a foot off from the tip where the aphids had infested, and there has been side shoot development and flowering, so I am well pleased, for me and the bees
Feel sorry for all you UK northerners, I am about to pluck my first baby cucumber

the toms are still in flower though no sign of fruit yet.
I probably need to start new plants off this year as it could be its occurred because its an old plant. Yep sunny well drained.
