Marestail, Subbase, Artificial Lawn

Hello All,

I've been reading about mares tail on the Forum already however everything I have read is around removing it from a garden but leaving the garden in tact.

We used to have paving slabs which had Mares tail growing in between them, I lifted these removed all of the roots and mares tail from where it was growing - most of roots seemed to be growing under the slabs themselves now down into the ground.

The base under the slabs isn't brilliant a very thin layer of hardcore - what I am looking to do is lay another inch of hardcore and lay artificial grass on top of that, first though I have to get rid of the mares tail. Will this simply grown back through the hardcore I lay down even if I manage to kill it with weed killer which from what I've been reading is also not that easy?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated - as I say I'm planning on putting down hardcore and artificial turf so nothing needs to be able to grow underneath it so I'm not limited (aside from by the law) as to what I use to kill the stuff.

Kind Regards,

Chris

Kurtail and get it as it comes up. Available from Progreen and the only thing I've found that works although it may take a couple of applications! The roots can grow to five feet or more so you need something systemic. If you're thinking pour petrol on it and set it on fire, paint it with sump oil....blah blah forget it!!

  • Fantastic I will give it a go thank you very much :)

My mum has Mares tail growing through Tarmac over hardcore.  My dad had tarmac laid because he hated mowing the lawn. I have no doubt that it will grow through hardcore and artificial turf.

Someone on here talked about injecting it the way one would do with japanese knapweed but I've looked and I can't find the thread. I remember being horrified at how long it took and he did hundreds of stems.

Trample on it and treat with glyphosate. repeat. repeat.....

Having read the information about the protection advised for using Kurtail I'm a bit apprehensive about going down that route.  Has anybody here actually used it, and if so what protective measures did you take.

The Kurtail info suggest you almost need to wear full bio-hazard protection.

I've used it and I sprayed in the evening when it was very still and took the normal precautions I would with any spray.

In my line of work I get to see a lot of Data Safety Sheets. Here's the one for bleach!

Just had a good chuckle at that Safety Sheet.  I'll have to make sure the missus gets fully kitted up before she uses bleach again. image

It's called a*s covering. image I think just apply with a dollop of common sense and try to remember not to drink it.

Very good advice.  I don't normally read the small print anyway, and now I remember why.
