Acer pruning

I notice on another thread somewhere that it's a bad idea to prune ornamental acers at this time of year.

There's one branch near the base which is getting in the way and spoiling the look of it. Would it be harmful to prune it?

    Hi B3. You should not prune acers at this time of year. It should be done from November til January when the tree is dormant. Pruining now will cause the tree to 'bleed' and this can seriously weaken it.
