Climbing plants to cover a dead Acer

gardpbgardpb Posts: 4

Sadly a beautiful Acer died this winter leaving a large gap in a border between a Pieris and another bronze leaf Acer. Its skeleton measures some 12ft x 12ft and I'm considering using it as a support for climbing plants, rather than removing it.

Soil is marginally acidic and ideal colours would be pink or purple. I'm thinking of Roses and Clematis.

I would welcome advice and plant suggestions.

It might be useful to try and get some idea of why the Acer died, before planting other stuff around it.

If it were me, I would remove it.

The most likely cause was my attempt at pruning it to give more room to the other Acer which is showing no sign of die back or other problems.

Hi gardpb. Keep in mind that this tree is dead and will eventually fall down as the roots rot and the weight of climbing plants will only add to this hazard.
