scabiosa beaujolais bonnets not growing again

I have about 3 scabiosa plants and love them. They've been in the garden almost 3 years. They flowered beautifully last year but this year there is no sign of any growth yet. I left all the heads/leaves on over winter and cut the plants back in early spring. Am I being impatient or should I have protected them over winter?
