New box hedge - issues

Last summer I moved into a new build property that came with a box hedge planted and ready to go. It's been growing really well but recently I noticed it's getting discoloured and covered in an odd dust. Does anyone know what's causing the issue and what I can do to fix it please?

Hi Ria. Could it be box rust?

  • I've got it on mine this year looked it up on the web hoping it wasn't box blight and I think it is caused by a box sucker called psylla buxa

you apparently eradicate it when you prune have a look at the information on the web.

  • Forgot to say DONT prune Buxus in the hot sun or when it's damp.

the hot sun will brown the tips where you have pruned and the moist air encourages box blight.

Mine did exactly the same when I trimmed it this summer and I was mortified having had my boxes for about the years as two 'bobbles' in pots by my door. I have recently moved house and this second year at this Country-side property my 'ends' post-trim early this spring went a mix of brown like yours.

Off to the garden centre I went and he sold me a tub of 'remidy' at £11.99 (not with me now so cannot recall the name as I'm not at home) but it consists of HUGE green tablets that desolve in 1 litre of water that we spray onto the BOX 1-5 times a year.

I chopped the 'new' and borwning ends right back to the previouis dark green (last years) leaves and sprayed and am FEEDING well on SEEWEED or TOMERITE every week.

Box seems to be growing fresh normal light-green leaves; so I think I just trimmed mine TOO early in the day and it got infected; don't think it's 'blight'.

    TRY what I have done.
