Leaf problems
I have a number of Zinnia which have scribble type lines over the leaves, didn't see anything underneath the leaves until today. Images attached. It also seems to have affected some of my sunflower plants. All grown from seed.
And today I have noticed the lines on the Cineraria I bought. What is it and is it best to throw away the plants or can I just pick off affected the leaves?
I also have some Honesty that have deformed leaves and white patches underneath, is it best to just pull the affected plants out?

Hi. That damage is caused by a bug called the leaf miner - for obvious reasons. It burrows just underneath the surface, usually the undersurface of the leaf. This greatly weakens the plant. If you can, try and squish the bugs when you see them, but heavily infested leaves can be removed. There are chemical controls if you want to use them but think about encouraging insect eating birds into your garden and resist the use of chemicals
Thanks Ladybird4 will be out tomorrow squishing. I've already chucked a few plants out will try and salvage some of the others.
The first is leaf miners, the two bottom pics are caused by thrips.
i had leaf miner on all my zinnias last year, really annoying, if you pick the leaves off if bad don't put them in the compost bin.
Thanks dave morgan and sanjy67, what do I do with the plants affected by thrips? Pull them out?
sorry i don't know what to do about thrips, not had that problem........ yet
Try Nemasys fruit and veg nematodes they kill thrips and other mining insects. used it last year and it worked brilliant also stopped a leaf cutter who was dismantling my gooseberries and roses!
