Will my aquilegia flower this year?
in Plants
I bought the plug plants offer from Gardeners World magazine a few months back, and recieved some foxglove, lavender, pink parasol and Aquilegia Mrs Scott-Elliott.
I have planted them out this week as they have been growing in the greenhouse although they are still very small.
Do you think they will flower this year? Or have I missed the window. I may put them in pots for this year and then plant out properly for flowers next spring?
Any help or suggestion would be amazing.
Thank you.
Carol.

Carol, they may still flower this year in the next few weeks but I would leave them in the ground anyway as aquilegia don't do very well in pots in my experience. They send down a tap root so best left as they are. The foliage is attractive anyway and they are as tough as old boots.
Some of mine from last year's sowing are in flower now and some are like brand new seedlings with two leaves. Who knows?? I'm leaving them in.

Agree with Bob, leave them, though if they've only just been put there you could group them. they make more of an impact in a group than in a row separated by other plants.

PS, I failed to answer the question. I think they're too small to flower this year but will be great next year as long as you leave them in the ground

That's really helpful. Thank you everyone for your help.

And I've just seen the cat poo next to the first flower! That's very annoying.
At least it was next to it and not under it!!!
I got the same offer as you Carol, however my leaves are all a red ish colour. Anyone know why that might be ? I'm planting them out at school after half term, so they just have to stay in their little pots for another week.
potbound and starving peanuts? Some of mine probably are, from my seed not plugs, a bit behind those in the pic
