Bulbs too small or not planted deep enough.

  • I bought three purple sensation Alliums in the Malvern show last year. I was expection some flowers but all I had were leaves and they were not as robust as I had expected.  What type of soil to alliums like.

    Glenys Rumble

Well drained and Sandy soil. In heavy clay they will rot.

    When did you plant them?

. I bought a load that I Autumn planted and they flowered, no trouble at all.

  • Thanks for the tip re. the soil needed. I bought the plants already in soil/pot at the malvern show last May. I put them in my new raised bed which is new soil bought by the ton. I`ll try again but with a mixture that I`ll make up myself and i`ll put them in a pot just to see what will happen.

I think they prefer being in the soil. Whenever I have used pots for excess ones, they don't do very well.

  • Thanks for that tip. I will try again but prepare the soil before hand

Plenty of grit if you have heavy soil, and plenty of sun Glenys - as much as you can give them  image

As fidget says, not being deep enough is also a  common reason for not flowering.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks I try all these remedies
