Pergola placing dilemma

I'm currently redesigning my garden and I would like to create a sitting area in the sunniest part of the garden. I would also like to build a pergola and the sitting area seem the logical place to put it. My worry is though that it will create shade and therefore rather defeat the object of creating a sitting area there! any thoughts/advice?

Any garden seating area can benefit from a little bit of shade. Sitting in the full glare of the sun can be a bit harsh on the eyes and on pale skin.

Assuming the sides and back are open trellis it shouldn't be a problem.  Keep any climbing plants under control and it should only create dappled shade at the seating area.  If you can have the seat facing south-ish that will also help minimise shade on the seat.

Thank you both. I'm terrible at making decisions and regret my choice almost the moment it's made but I think I'm going to go for it.

I've recently purchased an arbour and have been trying to decide exactly where to locate it.  I know the basic placement, but getting the actual direction its facing correct is important.  I've placed a bench in the rough position and have moved it around until I'm happy with the final decision.

If you don't have a spare bench, something like a garden chair would do the job, just to get a proper sense of everything from a seated position.
