Re-positioning an Acer tree

I have an Acer tree that is planted in the corner of my garden. It stands between 2/3 feet tall. Its growth is starting to be restricted at its back, near the high fence. How safe is it to move it to a more suitable position? Any safe tips on how to dig it up without damaging the roots would be a great help too.
Hope someone, anyone can help lol x

Hi royan, I'm no expert but have done this once a few years ago. Mine was about 4ft tall and too big for mum's garden, she wanted to chop it down but I took a chance on saving it.
Dug it up in the autumn, it took all afternoon as it was an established tree with a large root system. It was back breaking work but worth it.
Do you know how long yours had been growing in it's current spot?
If you are going to move it I would wait if you can, if I remember my research right now is one of the worst times to move one.
Hi Kitty, Thanks for replying xx It's been in for about 2 years. I just found out on you tube today that it's best to move it towards the end of Autumn?....... Jim x
Move it in winter when it is sleeping. Try to get as much of te root ball up as possible. Mulch and feed and keep fingers crossed. Have your new planting hole ready for it to go straight into.
Hi Robmarston, thanks for the info. I think that's what I will do. . . . . Jim
