Clematis pruning

B3B3 Posts: 27,504

I have a clematis that will flower late summer. Some stems have shot up higher than the fence. They have wound through roses so I can't bend them.

If I snip off the high bits, will they bush out?

In London. Keen but lazy.

  • You say your clematis will flower late Summer, so it is Group 3, you should have chopped it hard back in February.

You can still chop it back to 2 or 3 ft., this will delay flowering for a few days but you should get more flowers.

You could try it with half of the stems to prolong the display.
