Garlic disease

KeenOnGreenKeenOnGreen Posts: 1,831

We planted our garlic last Autumn but it looks infected, possibly some sort of rust. Do we treat it? Will it affect the crop? They are still too small to harvest.

    Here's what it looks like.

It looks like Leek rust which also affects garlic and other alliums.  There is no treatment but the bulbs should continue to develop, so I would just leave them.  Don't compost the top growth after you harvest though - either burn it or throw in the household waste.  I also wouldn't keep any cloves for replanting and would get fresh when the time comes.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks Bob.  Good to know we don't have to lose the crop.
