Lawn Care & Treatment

Good Morning All.

This is my first post on the forum so I hope I have placed it in the correct section. It seemed the most relevant to the topic.

I have over the last couple of years hired a well known garden care company to treat my lawn throughout the year.  Results have been good and the lawn was transformed from the previous owners.  However, due to having our second child, the decision was made to divert funds to areas deemed more necessary and unfortunately the lawn has taken a hit.

I would like to now start treating the lawn again, but instead of paying for someone else to do it, do it myself.  Problem is I cannot find anywhere a comprehensive treatment program that includes what treatments to use and when.

Does anybody know what treatments these companies actually use at the varying times throughout the year?  I don't mind having to buy in larger quantities if the product will last.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Adam.

These companies use the same stuff that's available off the shelf. They use nothing special. A weed and feed and basic lawn care will give you the same results as they achieve. They rely on people's laziness and lack of knowledge for business. I've never seen them spike or add grit for drainage or do anything other than scatter some chemicals about.

    Morning Dave,

    Thank you for the response.

Its more which type of product they use.  There are so many available but which is best to choose?  Also a way of buying cheaper in larger quantities than what is available at the garden centre.

I know they use specific stuff for keeping the lawn fed during summer months.  I have not seen a similar product in the garden centre either?

Hi Adam, as Dave says, companies don't use anything different to what we mere mortals use.

My grass was more buttercups and dandelions than grass when I moved here 3 years ago. There are now very few weedy areas which I deal with as follows :

I use a granular lawn feed in spring once the grass starts growing - usually Scott's lawn feed ( they make the Evergreen products) That feeds everything, including the weeds, but it also means that when I apply a weed and feed (about 4 weeks later) the grass is growing more strongly and there's more for the 'weed' part to get to grips with.  I use any make of weed and feed - I find the DIY store one just as good as the brands. I probably only use it once more - later in the summer - if necessary. You can also use liquid seaweed as a feed. There are quite a few  available.

Regular mowing is the best thing for your grass. Only take off about a third - don't scalp it. The grass then spreads sideways and becomes more dense.

I expect if you take a look online, you'll find large quantities available for bigger lawns. Hope that helps a little  image

Adam the only thing grass needs is nitrogen so growmore would be fine and as fairygirl says a bog standard weed and feed would be more than sufficient. You could try an agricultural supplier for larger quantities. Farmers use tons of the stuff.

May I mooch in? Have either of you any bright ideas for even distribution of Evergreen 4in1 in the absence of a lawn spreader. It says on the bag it must be evenly distributed...can it be done by hand?
