Hi Angela. Yes it is blackspot but don't despair it can be controlled. Some roses are more prone than others. I notice that you have froghoppers too. Inside the cuckoo spit foam is a little sap sucker. Spray these off with your garden hose. You can buy proprietary fungal treatments. Make sure all leaves are destroyed - don't put on the compost heap and as blackspot can be spread on your hands from rose to rose just be aware of this.

You have a touch of black spot, whitefly and a frog hopper. Pick off the affected leaves, spray the whole plant and ground around the plant with a fungicide (rose clear), feed and mulch and it will solve all of those problems in one go.

I used Rose Clear and a good feed regularly after I picked off all the unpleasant bits and they thrived which is a miracle because they came with the house and I am totally clueless about roses. imageimageimage Yip...totally!

  • Thank you ladybird4.  I'll get on it straight away.  I love my roses and try to to keep on top of the blackspot it's so annoying.  Any tops on the best spray?

I use Roseclear but I think that they are all efficient.

Make sure you do the undersides of the leaves as well Angela.

Other than not looking very nice, does black spot do any actual damage please?

Lantana, yes you can, although a good prune would be more effective. Tootles, yes black spot will weaken a rose so good hygiene, feeding and watering is essential to overall health.

  • Operation blackspot completed.  I'm hoping I have removed all the leaves some thankfully had nothing on them,  mainly my David Austin ones.  My Groupon roses don't look the best definitely worth the extra.

Not a problem!  Most f my plants are a couple of years old and I'm the same about pruning or even moving them, my sister is always telling me off.

Lantana, if you hard prune photinia you get loads of new growth with all that lovely colour. Same with roses, they love a bit of brutality. Photinia is part of the rose family so require similar treatment.
