One Acer struggling, the other doing fine
Hi there,
I have two Japanese Maples planted in containers side by side. Both were bought last year.
One has come out of winter going strong, the green one, while the other red one is really looking bad. The leaves are small and many look scorched, particularly at the top and extremities.
They sit in a sheltered spot, relatively protected from the wind. They get some direct sun but only in the evening.
Any idea what I should do?
Thanks, Phil

Just 2 things,
1. what compost did you plant it in?
2. Looks like it may need a bigger pot!
Not an expert but have a (red) acer like yours and it is doing okay.
1. Regular ol' compost
2. Maybe, did fine last year though and it's nowhere as big as it neighbour
Have you got a cat? I planted 2 red acers about 3 months ago. Same as you, one is doing fine, the other one died. I was a bit puzzled until I saw our Manx cat eating the final few dead leaves and then take a bite into the main branch!
Hi Phil
I have mine planted in ericaceous compost, it thrived after i changed from all purpose to ericaceous.
You could take out 1/3 of the compost from the container and replace it with ericaceous if you don't fancy repotting the whole lot. It may make a difference
.
Or give it a feed with ericaceous plant food.
This is my acer after i changed the compost.
(They are temperamental and can sulk like the best of us.)

We have two just the same as yours Phil. I think they were the same last year, so not too alarmed.
