Climbing plant for pot in the shade

Hello,

I really want to plant a pretty climbing flower like clematis around my back door ( see below). The trouble is I will need to plant it in a pot as it's on the patio and it is a very shaded area.

Anyone know the perfect plant for this area. Preferably flowering, and will grow all around the door/window.

Thanks

Ivy; parthenocissus or a clematis on a trellis could be possibilites

  • Thanks for replying, is it too shaded for a clematis or rose  though? This wall is shaded all day.

I just had another thought. How about climbing hydrangea. Mine grows on a north facing wall and it is just about coming into flower. It is very pretty. I have a Nelly Moser clematis growing through the hydrangea so I would say that you could grow one.

My first thought is climbing hydrangea,  but are they OK in pots?

  • Wow I didn't even know climbing hydrangeas existed,  just googled them and you are right, they are pretty.  I will look into it. I will also look at Nelly mower clematis.  Thanks for all the advice.

Hydrangeas don't like to dry out so you will need to keep it well watered at all times.
