Poorly Acer, what do I do?!

image

Can anyone recognise what's wrong with our Acer tree please? it was fine last year but this years leaves on some quite large branches have all curled and died. The wood on these branches under the bark doesn't look dark or feel mushy but it has been very wet on the grounD this winter/spring. Do these branches need to be removed? It would leave it quite bare! Thanks for any help - bit new to gardening  this scale.

I have taken the following from the RHS so I hope that it may help you:

    What is acer leaf scorch?

Leaf scorch rarely causes long-term damage, but it can leave an affected tree unsightly for the remainder of the growing season. Scorch happens whenever water is lost from the leaves more quickly than the roots can take it up. A wide range of environmental factors can cause this such as frost, drought including under-watering, waterlogging, drying winds, hot sun and even salt-laden winds in coastal areas.

I would be interested to know what is the prevailing wind direction in your garden.

I had a second red leafed Acer die this year. no-where near as grand as yours, in pots, but one was expensive. I went to collect some plants from a nursery last week, spoke to a lady there, she felt it was "windburn" or frost damage. .We are 5 miles from the sea, she says that is near enough for the salty air to do damage. The winter was wet and mild, but a couple of late frosts this month.

I don't think we have particularly strong prevailing wind. We are in quite a shelter spot. Thanks for your response.

I have three red acer bonsai (exactly the same variety) they were all fine last year, came into leaf this year at the same time, all in the same watering trough thru this hot dry weather, yet the one in the middle has wilted almost completely? its very strange?

Is the damage to my tree likely to be scorch leaf? If so I presume I leave the branches alone and just hope for the best? There is a few cotton wool like deposits on the tree (scale insects?) but would this cause the leaves to die like this?
