someone must have the answer for me

image  Hi there,I'm new to this site but I'm very hopeful that I will get the help I need. May I please give you bullet point facts else I'll be here all night .

I inherited a pond with my new house 6 years ago.

I decided to fill in the pond back in April this year and spent 4 days collecting and re-homing  the  pond wildlife.

I emptied the pond........it took hours

I pulled up the liner ...... first part of the job was complete.

2 days later and to my horrorimage the pond had filled back up to the brim without any rain.

I've emptied it 4 times since and its filled back up itself

Welsh Water say  NO broken pipes or drain issues with them.

Environment agency (at a glance) say NO natrual spring and they cant help

Both companies say its likely to be ground water off the mountains.

my question is this.

What do I do with a 12 ft by 3 ft pool with no liner that keeps filling itself up ?

Do I need to get my house foundations checked in case?

Where can I get ideas as to what I can do ?

Any Help will help me sleep and ease my anxiety

If you have a high water table, you could use it to plant bog lovers such as Gunnera.

its 3ft deep and 12ft wide, would I just put the plants into the water ?

Fill it up with soil, enough to fill the hole before planting.

hi  aacauser  I would be inclined  to agree with figetbones and say you have a high water table   (   might sound daft  this   try and dig  a hole  large enough  for a water pump to go down and pump water up )  most builders merchants hire them out )  just a idea  if water comes  back again try a smaller pool   for peace of mind  it would no be a bad idea to get I survey on ground    good luck       michael

What is the ground like around the pond?  Is it particularly boggy?  If you dig a hole elsewhere in the garden does it fill with water too?

Welcome to my world aa. I have a natural pond. You may find that what you took out was not pond liner but a porous membrane put there to keep everything tidy. You may also find that the previous owners put the pond in because it was a neccessity.

I moved into this house two years ago and the garage flooded every time it rained because the water simply had nowhere else to go and there was a lot of it. When the level came up in the pond all the ground around it also flooded and in certain dips in the lawn I was ankle deep in water...I say lawn....!

I am surrounded by natural springs and I now use the pond as a sump in order to keep the water level down right across my property. Without it my grass would never be cut.

In order to test my theory I borrowed a pump and ran the hose to the sheugh 60 feet away. When the level of the pond went down, the small lake round the oil tank 20 feet away disappeared after a day or two. Result!

I did this over a Summer and it never failed so I decided to go ahead with the next part of my plan. I dug a channel between pond and sheugh and laid a 4" pipe with a slight gradient and covered the whole thing back up again. It took the level of the pond down by about six inches. I put grills over the ends of the pipe to stop it blocking or rats coming up and now I'm happy as a pig in a slightly wet garden.

When it rains, which it does a lot, the level comes up slightly but it soon drains back down and the garage is a much drier place too....although the water still gets in through the crack in the wall. The garage was a barn and is much too low.... That's a project for another day.
