CLAY SOIL

This Texas clay soil is nasty. You can't dig it to plant anything, not much grows in. The only grass that gross in it is St. Augustine...I DO NOT LIKE St. Augustine at all. What can we do to amend it for good drainage, good grass, and plants that can thrive for a change. Plus, I'd like to not have it stick like glue to everything: shoes, tools, etc. I have 1/4 acre yard. Recently, I sowed some alfalfa to a small area as someone suggested. It has not sprouted yet, too soon. I really would like to do some landscaping. HELP

Hi boopcapps. Here in the UK we would dig in lots of horticultural grit and sand. We would add lots of well rotted farmyard manure and hire a rotavator to turn the soil over. It can take a while but the good point is that clay soils are usually rich in nutrients for the plants.

What Ladybird4 said. But don't dig in fine sand, I'd stick to the horticultural grit, which is crushed rock. But I suspect you will get good comments from a US forum with people from your state who know the soil and climate better than us.

I hope I can get some great results. They tell me here that the clay soil is on the east side of I-35 in the Austin/Round Rock area. I know that there has to be something more economical that hauling in truck loads of topsoil and even then, we still have clay under that. We truly need help. Every professional I have asked gives me different answers and all are different.
