Water feature
Hello fellow gardeners, thank you for welcoming me to your group.
I am pretty new to gardening and have been fumbling my way and learning a lot from my mistakes.
I am currently in the process of working on an area of my garden that is very shaded, damp and relatively cool. There is no electricity available to the area, but I would like to create a water feature/small fishless pond there if possible. It is an ideal location as many frogs and toads seem to like that area and I would enjoy having a pond for them to spawn in.
How do I stop the water becoming stagnant? What is more - where do I start??
Your help and advice would be very much appreciated.
Off to the garden now!
Best wishes
Tracey

I'd check out you tube:

lots of videos there to inspire
HI Tracey - it's quite a wide subject, but there's plenty of info out there - just Google "wildlife pond" - and then, when you've got a good idea what you're after, there are plenty of people on here - me included - who have one of these and would be happy to help!
My first 2 points from your post would be that you don't need electricity for a wildlife pond (if you were thinking of a pump, that's not recommended for wildife as it's likely to suck it in!) and that you'll need some sunlight to keep the pond healthy - I think it's this that enables oxygen to be recycled in the pond without a pump!).
Hope you find some good info and enjoy your pond - even if the area you're thinking of is too shady, frogs will spawn in standing water of any size - as evidenced by the batch in an upturned wok lid at our place this year! A plastic washing up bowl sunk into sunny flowerbed might do the trick!
Thank you both very much. Your help and advice has definitely pointed me in the right direction. I think I am going to have to spend sometime watching that area of the garden to see if there is any point in the day it does receive sunlight - then I will know if I will be able to keep the nature pond healthy.
Thank you again.
