Problem Weed Destroying Garden

HI,could anyone please advise me what this is growing from under my lawn over the last 2 years,it has a large horizontal root that grows upwards threw the lawn,it seems to come from a long root from the hedgerow which is a hawthorn.any help and advise on getting this removed and how too?would be great.thanks

It looks like suckers from a tree, but it's not hawthorn.
What else is there? any stumps or cherry or plum close by?
In the sticks near Peterborough
next door does have a cherry tree,how can this be treated?
