Japanese Maple losing bark
Hi,
I would not class myself as a gardener but do my best to keep things alive.
We have a beautiful Japanese Maple in the font garden that we also light up in the winter but this year it has lost all of it leaves and the bark is starting to separate from the trunk.
I have included some pictures and the only explanations I have found online are squirrels and/or boring insects.
Although we do have a number of grey squirrels, there does not appear to be squirrel damage on the bark. And there does not seem to be any signs of a boring insect.
I am not sure what to do, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sorry stebet but anything without bark is dead, that's where the life is in a tree/shrub. Is there any possibility that the wires have cut in to the bark?
Any branch without bark needs cutting off, right back to the base. Then see what you've got left.

I agree with nutcutlet. My concerns woud be the wires wrapped around the tree. Are they left in place all year around?
The wires are left in place but are not cutting into the bark.
Appreciate the advice so action place is
1) Remove wires (just in case). Will add it to my garden job list for today.
2) Remove problem branches. Are recommendation from how far from the joint to cut
3) Hope it recovers
Thanks for all the comments, it really is appreciated.
