Gunnera - can I make a bog for it?

I woild really like a gunnera for near the pond. However that area of the garden is not at all moist or boggy and I have read that gunnera prefer to be in moist ground or even have their feet in water. Is it possible to make ground boggy? For example can one line the ground underneath and keep it waterlogged (like a soil filled pond type thing!) ... Or am I being totally daft? image

    I reckon you can: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=356

Gunneras get really big if they're happy though. I don't know whether an artificial bog would be enough for one? That said, we had a weirdly wet bit of ground just outside our old house. It was a small suburban garden behind a Victorian house, we could think of no explanation other than it being a redundant soakaway. We planted a gunnera and it was very happy indeed (and the wall at the end of the kitchen was much less damp...).

    Good luck with it.

I have two Gunneras and neither of them is in a particularly wet spot despite the fact that most of my garden is pretty much waterlogged. For some reason the previous owner planted them in high spots out of the worst of the wet. They are both fine and thriving and doubling in size every day at the moment.

I did this with something - can't remember if it was gunnera or something else. Dug a huge hole and lined it with an off cut of pond liner. Stabbed it with a fork a few times and planted on top.

  • Thanks all for the advice. I will give it a try then. I think I have some old leftover pond liner I can use. I read that its best to keep it watered with a constantly dripping leaky hosepipe, but I can't be bothered with all that so will just keep it watered im summer image

Mine's at the top part of the lawn and mostly I just hit it with the lawnmower. It seems to like it alright.
