How to inject Japanese Knotweed stems

Hi Folks

I know that the injections are to be between the 1st and 3rd nodes and I see there are specially designed injectors that appear to stab through the circumference of the stems, with needles which have holes before the end to squirt into the hollow of the JP stem.

I have also read that a probe is pushed through stem below lower nodes to allow water to escape.nodes to allow water to escape, before using a regular syringe and needle, rather than go to the expense of the specially designed jp injectors.

So my question is, if I do use a regular syringe and needle, should I first shove a thick nail or similar through the stem before administrating the recommended solution with a regular syringe and needle?

Another other injection tips appreciated.

    Hi cc120

That is exactly what I did with a large stand of knotweed.   Puncture then inject.

It took a couple of years to get rid of the bigger stems,  5 years on we still get the odd weedy bit appearing so i smear, with gloved hands, a strong weedkiller solution on the leaves - stems are far too thin to inject now.

    Thank you Auntiemand,

what did you use to puncture and what did you use to inject?

also is there a need to puncture through the whole stem, that is, holes either side before you inject or just a hole where you are going to place the syringe?

Gosh, sorry for the late reply!

I used a screwdriver to puncture and a large syringe to inject.   Latter begged from the docs!

After 5 years there is no sign of it.   Fingers crossed.

You can purchase a large syringe from a friendly pharmacy or vets.
