HEDGE REPLACEMENT
A 12 metre hedge separating my driveway from my neighbour needs to be replaced and I'd like some advice on what to plant - it needs to be easy maintenance as I'm the one who'll be looking after it! I'm looking at photinia Red Robin and Eleagnus Ebbingei? or possibly a mix of the two. What would you recommend?
With thanks as always

Hi Pinkpeony. Have you thought about having a hedge of native British trees which you can keep hedge size with really harming them. Things like hawthorn, hazel, spindle, holly and you could have non natives such as osmanthus and berberis,
Thank you Ladybird4 and Verdun, your comments sent me off to the local garden centre this morning to look at your suggestions - three sides of the car park there have hawthorn, yew and privet in the hedges so that me gave a good idea of how those particular shrubs might look. I have to confess I hadn't taken much notice before!!
I have an osmanthus in my garden just over a metre high and looking good but didn't think of it as an option - so decision time now..... Verdun, I don't have Photinia or Eleagnus, so have no experience of them, your advice is appreciated.
Thank you both again, I'm looking forward to planning and buying the plants (I'm getting someone else to do the digging out of the existing hedge which has been here since we moved in 30 years ago - kept at 4ft high it now contains all manner of 'stuff' - ivy is growing through, holly has appeared from somewhere, likewise ash? Time for a change.
