    We'll agree to disagree.

If you use membrane, how do the worms come up and break down the leaf litter ( as they would in a forest floor ) ?  they can't.

If you plant densely enough and mulch thickly with organic matter in Spring , you won't have weeds, if you have a weed problem, you've got too much bare soil.

Might I also suggest you lose some slabs on that top terrace area where it meets the fence at the steps. It would give the top area greater identity and a feeling of enclosure without blocking the view beyond.and it would screen the gable of the shed.

If it were my garden, I'd also made the beds at the boundaries with you neighbours deeper too.

    Devon.

well as far as i am aware worms break down matter and "POO" out nutrients that are similar to soil? Which is the whole purpose of me putting weed fabric and bark down. Its that very same matter that I dont want, because i want to discourage any growth that i cannot control.

As for my borders, i believe you mean width not depth. But the width is 3 feet, and again a lot can grow within that space but I have 2 Labradors, and they need the patio area.

Thanks for your help though, but I think Verdun has answered a lot of my questions.

    :)
