Comfrey

lisabjlisabj Posts: 16

I have been making my own comfrey feed for a couple of years now, but I have two questions -

1)  How long will it keep?  I usually put the undiluted mix into old milk bottles, but have some left over from last year and am not certain whether this old mix is any good or not.

2)  Having just watched Monty's video on the subject, he used his spare leaves as a mulch on his greenhouse toms, I wonder if using the liquid feed on top of this would be too much?

    Hi Tigerburnie

If you know anyone with comfrey ask them for a piece of root, you will soon have what you need.

i have planted through division at my allotment so have where I want it because it grows so quickly I can get at least five cuts a year for my smelly teas and of course soil conditioner and compost bins

happy smelly gardening it's an acquired smell let me tell you

  • You can buy seed from catalogues or even eBay. Be careful as some are sterile forms (great if you don't want them spreading everywhere) but extras come in handy when it's time to do swaps.

  • Agree the best way is from a root cutting. If you can get the Bocking 14 strain.....it wont spread from seed (only root cuttings). Wild comfrey will rapidly become a nuisance.

I'm in Ireland and could only find one supplier...and had to get it via internet/through the mail.

Its incredibly easy to grow. I make comfrey 'tea' and use any surplus as a compost accelerator.

    Good luck.

Thanks guys for the information, I will look around, but there's none in the local garden center's or the plant nursery.

  • Have to admit I've been looking for comfrey for a while now as a compliment to my 'nettle soup' My neighbours think I'm mad because I have two large pots with nettles growing in them but I wouldn't be without them, even the smell calms down after a little while. image
