Lobelia round base of trees in pots

i have a number of standards in pots

to jazz them up a bit i have been considering putting lobelia round the top of pots

is this a good idea or will the roots of lobelia mess up my standards?

    I think planting anything that will compete for food and water around standards is not a good idea. I agree with Verdun.

    Ooh thanks both- i love the idea of coloured chippings- never thought of that.
