Judging from the hollyhocks that I have been growing I think that discoloured leaf is just dying off - some of mine have done that even though the rest of the plant is quite healthy - it may have been one of the first leaves on the plant initially and they do tend to turn browny yellow before dying - you should be able to pull it off fairly easily Luke, and the colour of the flower will be a complete surprise to you!

It is good to try other plants Verdun - there is such a wide choice out there and we do tend to get into a rut - planting our favourites year in year out.  Going along to open gardens, shows, parks etc is a great way to view plants in all their glory. Often GC stock plants in their prime before they have produced a flower so it is difficult to visualize the end product & how it will look when planted out. I hope my plants  don't get hollyhock rust as I have grown about 2 dozen from seed this year.

Wasn't mentioned on the updates I don't think, copy it to your photos then pinch it apart. Although, I did manage to pinch it very briefly on the thread.

pinching is now working on my iPad. Hold your index fingers both on the picture, push together then pull apart.

New Red Hollyhock - we have planted three in pots and about a dozen directly into the soil this year.image
