Tumbling Tom
in Fruit & veg
I have ordered some Tumbling Tom seeds online and all 10 seeds arrived!!!! I am a little late sowing them and whilst the pack does not have instructions I think I need to be planting these directly into a basket now, is that right? I only have 10 precious seeds so want to do it right! thanks in advance.

It's a bit late in the season to start sowing toms now emma.
I'd keep the seed and sow them around mid-March next year.
Just buy a tumbler for this year from a garden cantre. I'm about to put one in a hanging basket as I do every year, and toms are usually ready from late july and just go on and on.
Don't feed your tumbler until you see the first tiny fruits forming, then give tomato food weekly.
Hang you basket where it will get lots of sun, but remember not to let it dry out
good luck

Oh
! Will they keep OK until next year? Thank you
They'll be fine. Most seed packs have a use by date. Keep them somewhere cool, dark and dry.
I used to grow from seed every year, and it's good to tend the plants and eventually get fruit.
But tom's need warmth AND light to grow well and in the UK, whilst it's not too tricky to provide warmth in the dark days of early spring, it's less easy to provide light that is useful to the plant. That's why often home-sown toms can get very straggly.
I buy little plants in pots usually around this time of year - it's a lot easier and I get good sturdy plants.
