I have a large camellia that was here when I moved in. Its grown lots in the 18montha we've been here. Ideaaly it needs chopping back a bit as spread over the lawn a bit.
When is best to do this? How far back can it be cut?
I love it so don't want to damage it!

I should imagine straight after the flowers have died.It may be to late now to cut it back lightley now. Next years flowers will shortly be forming flower buds on this years new growth
The best time to prune camellia is right after it has stopped blooming. Generally the flowering season is upto may or june. I found this website http://www.gardenplantsvs.com/en/about-camellia/model-724-999 which gives all the required information about camellia and many other plants which i have i my garden. Hope this helps.
I'm not sure it was ever cared for before (gardening wasn't on previous owners list)
Its just finishing flowering, well almost. Can I chop back hard? Ideally want to loose about a foot at the front
Did mine today, perfect time for pruning Japonica
Yup like everything here the main bits are OK just needs some TLC. If it stops raining and I'm well enough it'll get a good cut soon.
Presume I can take cuttings with the clippings
We have four very mature camellias & try to prune two each year, after flowering as has been said already - not too hard but to generally give them a good rounded shape. I am sure all the advice given is correct but I don't like to do hard pruning myself.
