Acer Koto no ito

sessypsessyp Posts: 6

Hi, I've not had much luck with Acers, they seem not to survive the winter-neither in pot nor ground.

However, I couldn't resist buying Koto no ito, its long leaves lured me.

Any tips or successes out there?

They don't like wind, being waterlogged or early morning sun so best plant them (or place the pot) in a sheltered spot which is west-facing.  If planting in pots, use a John Innes #3 mixed with about 10%  ericaceous compost as they prefer a slightly acid soil.  If you grow them in a pot, raise it off the ground by using a pot stand or a few stones under it.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
