Try doing the same as for ponds. A couple of handfuls of straw inside a porous bag along with a stone to keep it down.

Hi Bill. Does your water butt have a lid?

Rain water from a roof via a gutter and pipe to a Butt will be anything but pure you could add acid Vinegar or such it works though would you use the water on delicate plants. My Butts when I had them had taps on the base so you drew water from the bottom. I found it much easier to fill buckets from the tap and leave them to gas off for a couple of days then water with that, our water is soft, hard water could be a problem. Some people have to use Butts and the answer above of straw in a sack though I thought it had to float?

If your water butt is covered and dark, then algae can't grow.
I have 2 covered butts facing south with no shade and I've never had algae, plenty of gnat larvae, but no algae.
Not sure what adding vinegar will do really other than make it more acidic.
Rain water is slightly acidic and has a low amount of dissolved solids.

If you're getting a lot of 'bits' floating about in your butt, you could tie a bit of cut up stocking over the end of the downpipe.

Didn’t I hear some time back that our Euro friends in Brussels told us that barley straw was being withdrawn from sale as a pond/water clearer and it would become “illegal” to use it?

I doubt they will have a “water butt inspection team” set up to catch us but with those guys, we never know.

    Keep your lids on!!!!
